The First United Presbyterian Church of Atlantic, Iowa started out as two congregations, First Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian Church. First Presbyterian was founded in 1869, and United Presbyterian in 1867. In 1958, two American Presbyterian denominations, the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the United Presbyterian Church of North America, merged to form a new denomination called Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. In accordance with this national plan of union, a joint committee of both Atlantic Churches was formed and discussions followed until a plan of union was approved by both congregations. The churches joined together as First United Presbyterian Church on October 7, 1962. We are members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and are governed in accordance with the rules and regulations thereof.
